Irish Road Bowling

Irish Road Bowling is a traditional sport that's particularly popular in Ireland (especially in Cork and Armagh) and has also spread to areas with Irish diaspora communities like parts of West Virginia in the US.

Here's how it works: players throw a heavy metal ball (called a "bullet" or "bowl") along a winding country road, trying to cover a set distance in the fewest throws possible. The ball typically weighs about 28 ounces (roughly 800 grams) and is slightly smaller than a cricket ball.

The thrower gets a running start and hurls the ball underhand along the road. The sport requires a combination of strength, technique, and strategy - you need to judge curves in the road, avoid hazards, and sometimes choose between a safe shot and a riskier one that might gain more distance. Roads are usually temporarily closed for matches.

It's also called "road bowls" or "bullets" in different areas, and in Irish it's known as "Ból Chumann" or "Ból na Bóthair." The sport has ancient roots - some trace it back centuries - and it remains a cherished part of Irish sporting culture, with competitions still held regularly. There's even a world governing body that oversees international competitions.
